Shoulder replacement is safe, effective

BALTIMORE, March 27 (UPI)

Contrary to what many believe, total surgical replacement of arthritic shoulder joints is of no greater risk than other joint surgeries, says a U.S. study.

In fact, the study, published in the online version of the journal Clinical Orthopedics, found that patients who undergo shoulder arthroplasty to relieve chronic pain can expect significantly fewer complications, much shorter hospital stays and less cost compared to patients getting hip or knee replacements.

Researchers at The Johns Hopkins University, led by Dr. Edward McFarland, say many reject shoulder joint replacement because of the fear of risks and costs. The researchers examined all arthroplasties performed in Maryland to alleviate osteoarthritis pain between 1994 and 2001, including 625 shoulder procedures.
