10 Ways to Cancer-Proof Yourself

Is there a cancer remedy?

People beat cancer everyday but they just don't know it because they never actually contract it. Beating cancer by not contracting it is the best cancer remedy possible... and it's simple to do

While there is no silver bullet or magic pill that you can take to eliminate your risk of cancer, there certainly are some fairly simple measures that you can undertake to minimize your cancer risks to the best of your ability.

Experts say that only 30% (or less) of all cancer cases are unpreventable. This means that the vast majority of cancers can be prevented.

The 10 recommendations below are the most impactful and easy to implement steps that you can put into action today.

1) Get a good nights sleep

The quality and quantity of your sleep can dramatically alter the balance of hormones in your body. This may impact the progression of cancer through shifts in hormones like melatonin, which the brain makes during sleep.

Melatonin is an antioxidant that helps to suppress harmful free radicals in the body which slows the production of estrogen. Estrogen has been shown to enable cancer. When your sleep is disrupted, your body may produce less melatonin and therefore may have less ability to fight cancer. Note that exposure to light – even a night light – during sleep has been shown to reduce melatonin levels; so be sure to sleep in complete darkness whenever possible.

Additional impacts from a lack of sleep are:

Reductions in the levels of Cortisol in the body. Cortisol helps to regulate immune system response including regulating natural killer cells which help the body to fight cancer.

Increased insulin resistance which has been clearly linked to cancer in studies

2) Eat fresh foods; nuts, fruits, vegetables and spices daily

Studies have shown that a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices, will dramatically reduce your risk of cancer. These foods are delicious, readily available and have anti-cancer properties that everyone can benefit from.

The goal should be to eat at least five servings daily of the following:

- Cruciferous vegetables... Which contain glucosinolates that help to boost the body’s immune response while detoxifying it also. Examples of Cruciferous vegetables are Brussel sprouts, cabbage, mustard, bok choy, turnips, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, and kale.
- Berries… many berries contain powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins that have been shown to protect against cancer. Examples of some recommended berries are strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.
- Spicy vegetables… contain capsaicin which has been shown to neutralize cancer causing nitrosamines. Examples of cancer fighting spicy vegetables are jalapenos peppers and chilli peppers.
- Nuts… many nuts, such as Brazil nuts, contain high levels of antioxidants like kampferol and quercetin as well as the mineral selenium which are all touted as anti-cancer agents.

3) Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates as they fuel cancer cells

The proof is in… Eating too much sugar will cause your blood sugar level to rise and increase your risk of contracting a host of cancers.

A major European study which looked at 64,500 people over the course of 13 years, linked high blood sugar with cancers of the pancreas, skin, womb, and urinary tract. High blood sugar was also linked to breast cancer for women under 49.

If your blood sugar levels remain elevated, even mildly, over a period of time, your risk of diabetes will increase. Women with type 2 diabetes, which is associated with obesity, were 17 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than those without diabetes, according to a study.

A four-year study at the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection in the Netherlands compared 111 biliary tract cancer patients with 480 controls. Cancer risk associated with the intake of sugars, independent of other energy sources, more than doubled for the cancer patients.

4) Cleanse your body daily

Carcinogens get into our body either from the food we eat or from the environment within which we live. To flush these cancer causing agents from our body’s we need to drink at least 8 cups (1 litre) of water a day. Another great way to cleanse your body is to work up a good sweat on a regular basis, either from exercise or from taking a sauna. Sweating is the best way to pull cancer causing toxins out of the fatty tissues and organs within which carcinogens are stored.

5) Take in some natural sunlight

Recharge your body and fight cancer while enjoying the sunshine. The human body produces Vitamin D naturally when exposed to sunshine and recent studies have shown that the benefits of Vitamin D as obtained from sunlight (or in supplement form) far outweigh any risk of contracting skin cancer.

Specifically… "Fifteen hundred Americans die every year from [skin cancers]. Fifteen hundred Americans die every day from the serious cancers."

It’s a no-brainer – get some sun!... but do it intelligently. Only brief full-body exposure (no sunscreen) to bright summer sunshine — 10 or 15 minutes a day — is required to generate large amounts of natural vitamin D.

What’s the benefit?… A four-year U.S clinical trial, just published in June 2007, involving 1,200 women found those taking getting adequate levels of vitamin D had about a 60-per-cent reduction in cancer incidence, compared with those who didn't. The results were so dramatic — twice the impact on cancer attributed to smoking — that the published results could be viewed as an error… but they’re not.

Aside from the disease fighting antibodies that a baby can only get from breast milk, studies indicate that cancer fighting immune factors are also transferred to the baby via breast milk. These immune factors are key to preventing childhood cancers.

9) Exercise regularly

The benefits of exercise are numerous and cascading. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind which leads to a healthy attitude and a positive outlook. All of which contributes to immune system health and a body that is fully equipped to combat cancer. This is supported by a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2000 which states that; “the value of exercise should not be underestimated as a way of preventing cancer.” This study presented evidence that regular exercise helped protect against many forms of cancer including colon cancer and breast cancer. The recommended level of activity is 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

10) Avoid ingesting, inhaling or absorbing chemicals

Proximity to products containing volatile gases such as formaldehyde and benzene needs to be minimized. You can do this by using natural cleaning products such as Tea Tree oil cleaners. Also minimize exposure to chemical air fresheners, chemical pesticides and perfumed products.

Minimize the use of plastic food containers and do not microwave food or liquids in plastic containers for any reason as plastics “off-gas” which results in foods absorbing quantities of petroleum based chemicals that are carcinogenic.

Lastly; use a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) to eliminate indoor air pollution.
